يٰٓاَيُّهَاالَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامَ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَی الَّذِيۡنَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ. اَيَّامًا مَّعْدُوْدَاتٍ. فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مَّرِيْضًا اَوْ عَلٰی سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ اَيَّامٍ اُخَرَ. وَعَلَی الَّذِيۡنَ يُطِيْقُوْنَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِيْنٍ. فَمَنْ تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَهُوَ خَيۡرٌلَّهُ. وَاَنْ تَصُوْمُوْا خَيۡرٌ لَّكُمْ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

“O (people) you who have believed, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you, so that you may become righteous. Fast for a specific number of days, but whoever is ill or on a journey shall fast a similar number of days later on. And for those who can fast only with great difficulty, there is a ransom: the feeding of one poor person for each day missed. And whoever does good voluntarily, it is better for him. And fasting is better for you if only you knew.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183-184)

The Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Said:

Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) emphasized the importance and benefits of fasting. Here are some of his sayings regarding fasting:

  • “Fasting is a shield with which a servant protects himself from the Fire.” (Sahih Bukhari)
  • “The fast and the Quran are two intercessors for the servant of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: ‘O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.’ The Quran will say: ‘I prevented him from sleeping at night. Let me intercede for him.’ And their intercession will be accepted.” (Ahmad)
  • “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and with the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Bukhari)
  • “Fasting is not merely abstaining from eating and drinking, but it is also abstaining from ignorant and indecent speech.” (Sahih Bukhari)
  • “There are two pleasures for the fasting person: one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord.” (Sahih Bukhari)
